Processor, Battery, And Camera

The Stylo 3 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor clocked at 1.4GHz. This is a newer, faster chipset than the Snapdragon 410 in the Stylo 2 and Warp 7. It scored 42,131 on the AnTuTu benchmark, which measures overall system performance, surpassing both the Warp 7 (26,882) and the Snapdragon 615-powered Galaxy J7 (33,107).The phone has 2GB of RAM, allowing it to handle a decent amount of multitasking. Performance is smooth overall, and it handled demanding games like GTA: San Andreas without any difficulty, something its predecessor was unable to manage. That said, if you push it too hard and try to open too many apps you will notice some slowdown.Battery life is good.

The phone clocked 6 hours, 33 minutes when streaming full-screen video over LTE at maximum brightness, a bit longer than the Stylo 2 (6 hours, 6 minutes). That’s slightly longer than the Warp 7 (5 hours, 49 minutes) and the J7 (6 hours, 21 minutes), though none of them can compete with the LG X Power (8 hours, 48 minutes). There’s no fast charging, but the battery is removable so you can always swap it out for a fresh cell. The Stylo 3 has unremarkable 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras. The rear sensor takes decent pictures outdoors and in good lighting, provided you hold it steady and give it time to focus. There’s no optical image stabilization like you’ll find on higher-end phones, so there are instances where shots come out blurry. Pictures taken indoors were often muddy. The front camera is decent for video chats and selfies, but tends to soften details a bit too much even after you set the Beauty Slider to zero.Video records at 1080p in 30fps. It has the same issues with focus and low light as stills.

Performance And Connectivity

Boost Mobile operates on Sprint’s network, so service is identical. The phone supports CDMA (0/1/10), GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz), UMTS (1/2/3/4), and LTE bands (2/4/5/12/25/26/41). It also supports 2×20 carrier aggregation, and automatically switches between 4G LTE and the faster LTE Plus when available. We tested the Stylo 3 in midtown Manhattan where we received an impressive top speed of 33Mbps down and 19Mbps up. It’s the best network performance we’ve recorded recently on Sprint’s network.Other connectivity protocols include Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi on the 2.4GHz band. If you want NFC and dual-band Wi-Fi your only option in the sub-$200 price range is the aging Galaxy J7.Call quality is solid. Noise cancellation is good at blotting out background noise and earpiece volume is loud, however we did notice occasional skips in transmissions. The back-facing speaker gets fairly loud, though not quite loud enough to heard outdoors.

3

Software And Stylus

The phone ships running Android 7.0 Nougat. Despite LG’s heavy skin on top, that’s a lot more recent than the Android 6.0 (and older) you’ll find on the J7, Warp 7, and many other phones in this price range. LG removed the usual app drawer so apps are splashed across the home screens, but that’s easy to change in Settings. The bigger difference comes in the form of visual changes to app icons, the Settings menu, and elements of the interface.Boost Mobile phones often come loaded with bloatware and the Stylo 3 doesn’t escape unscathed. You’ll find apps from Amazon, Boost, Facebook, Uber, and others, for a total of about 25 preinstalled apps, most of which you can’t remove. The leaves you with less than half of the internal storage available for use, just 6.67GB out of 16GB.

If you’re big on snapping pictures you’ll want to use a microSD card.As touched on earlier, pulling out the included stylus automatically launches some custom software. A menu appears in the top right of your screen for easy access to Capture+, Pop Memo, Pop Scanner, and Quick Memo apps. They let you jot down quick notes, write on the screen, and add text to photos. There’s also space for you to pin an app of your choice. The stylus itself has a rubber tip and is comfortable to write with, though it doesn’t offer quite the same robust software experience as Samsung’s S Pen. Still, it lets you use the Stylo 3 as an effective note-taking device, which is more than you’ll find elsewhere in this price range.

Conclusions

If you miss the discontinued Note 7, the LG Stylo 3 is a good midrange alternative. It includes everything we liked about the Stylo 2 and adds a faster processor, a fingerprint sensor, and LTE Plus for superior performance all around. And newer software places it another notch above aging competition like the Galaxy J7 and ZTE Warp 7. That makes the Stylo 3 the best phablet (and best midrange phone in general) you can buy on Boost Mobile, and our Editors’ Choice.
